Every exterior paint label lists a minimum application temperature — usually 35°F or 50°F. Homeowners read that, look at a 55°F October forecast, and assume they are fine. Then the paint fails.
Temperature is rarely what kills an exterior job around Puget Sound. Moisture is. Specifically, the relationship between air temperature and dew point.
The number that actually matters
Latex paint cures by evaporating water out of the film. If the surface is colder than the dew point, water condenses onto the fresh paint instead of leaving it. What you get is surfactant leaching (those brown streaks on fresh paint), poor film formation, and adhesion that never fully develops.
The working rule professionals use: the surface temperature must stay at least 5°F above the dew point for the entire cure window, which is several hours after application — not just while the brush is moving.
In practice, that means an October afternoon at 58°F with a dew point of 54°F and a clear sky is a bad day to paint, even though it feels perfect outside. The siding will drop below dew point by 6pm and your top coat will spend the night wet.

Why rain is not the whole story
A dry forecast is necessary but not sufficient. Three other things matter:
- How long since the last rain. Wood siding needs 24–48 hours of dry weather to release surface moisture. Painting damp wood traps water behind the film, and that is what produces blistering next summer.
- Which elevation you are on. North-facing walls in Bothell or Edmonds stay damp and shaded for days after south walls are bone dry. A good crew sequences the house by exposure, not by convenience.
- Overnight lows. The forecast high is irrelevant if it drops to 41°F at 3am while your second coat is six hours old.
Painting in the shoulder seasons
April and October are absolutely workable — with adjustments. What changes:
- We start later in the morning to let surfaces warm and dry, and stop coating by mid-afternoon.
- We use products rated for low-temperature application, which have modified coalescing agents that let the film form at 35–40°F.
- We work the sunny elevations and save shaded north walls for the warmest part of the day.
- We check surface temperature with an infrared thermometer instead of trusting the phone weather app.
If a contractor offers you an exterior in late October or March, ask them what dew point spread they will stop working at. If the answer is a real number, they know what they are doing. If it is "we just watch the rain," keep your deposit in your pocket.
Moss, mildew and the wash
Western Washington houses grow things. That green-black film on the north side is mildew and algae, and painting over it guarantees failure — it keeps growing under the new film and pushes it off.
The wash before an exterior repaint is not cosmetic. It is a chemical kill step: a mildewcide solution applied at low pressure, dwelled, then rinsed. Low pressure matters. High-pressure washing on cedar shingles or lap siding drives water behind the boards, gouges soft grain, and creates the exact moisture problem you are trying to eliminate.
After washing, the house needs to dry — typically 24–48 hours in summer, longer in shoulder season. Any crew that washes in the morning and starts spraying in the afternoon has skipped this.
Booking strategy
Every painter in this region is booked solid from June through September. The homeowners who get the best crews and the best scheduling are the ones who booked in January through March for a summer slot.
Two practical moves: get your exterior quoted in winter when estimators have time to be thorough, and take a shoulder-season slot (late April or late September) if your schedule allows — availability is better and crews are less rushed.
