"Low-VOC" is on nearly every can now, which has made the term almost meaningless as a shopping signal. Here is what it actually means and what it does not.
What a VOC actually is
Volatile organic compounds are the carbon-based solvents that evaporate out of paint as it dries. They are what you smell, and they are what causes headaches, dizziness and airway irritation during and shortly after painting. In older oil-based paints they were a large fraction of the can.
They are measured in grams per liter. For context: traditional oil-based paint could exceed 400 g/L. Modern standards are far lower.
Low-VOC vs zero-VOC

The colorant loophole
This is the part almost nobody explains at the counter. The VOC number on the can refers to the untinted base. Colorant is added afterward at the store, and conventional colorants carry their own VOCs.
So a "zero-VOC" base tinted to a deep saturated color with standard colorant can land back in low-VOC territory. Deep colors need more colorant, so the effect is largest exactly where people assume it is smallest.
The fix is simple: ask for a zero-VOC colorant system. Every major manufacturer has one. It costs nothing extra and it is the difference between a real zero-VOC job and a label.
"Zero-VOC base and zero-VOC colorant." If your painter looks confused, that is useful information.
Nursery, asthma and pregnancy
For a nursery, a bedroom belonging to someone with asthma, or a home where someone is pregnant, this is what we recommend and what we do:
- Zero-VOC base with zero-VOC colorant, in a premium line so you still get two-coat coverage and washability
- Paint the room well ahead of when it will be occupied — two weeks is comfortable, one week is workable
- Continuous cross-ventilation during application and for 72 hours after
- The sensitive person out of the house on painting days, regardless of the product
- Zero-VOC primer too. People spec the paint carefully and then use whatever primer is on the shelf, which is often the more aggressive product.
Pets
Birds are the real concern. Bird respiratory systems are extraordinarily sensitive and they should be out of the home entirely during painting and for at least 24–48 hours after. This is not a paint issue specifically — it is true of most household chemicals.
Cats and dogs should be kept out of freshly painted rooms until the paint is dry to the touch, mostly because of the mess. The bigger practical risk on a paint day is an open door, not the fumes.
Ventilation that actually works
Cracking one window does very little. What works is cross ventilation with a pressure difference:
- Open windows on two opposite sides of the room or the house
- Put a box fan in one window facing out. Pulling air out works better than blowing it in.
- Run bathroom and range exhaust fans — they vent outside
- Keep it going for 48–72 hours after the last coat, not just while painting
In our climate, plan around the weather. If the forecast is four days of rain, run the ventilation in shorter bursts on the drier hours rather than soaking the house.
The smell after
Even a zero-VOC job has a faint smell for a few days as the film cures — that is normal and is not the same as VOC off-gassing. Bowls of activated charcoal or coffee grounds in the room help. Baking soda helps a little. Candles and air fresheners just add another smell on top.
If a strong solvent smell is still present after a week, something else is going on — an oil-based primer, a specialty coating, or inadequate ventilation. That is worth a phone call.
