Painted cabinets are the highest-return project in residential painting. They are also the one most likely to fail, and when they fail, they fail visibly — chipping at exactly the spots your hand touches a hundred times a week.
The good news is that cabinet failure is not mysterious. It comes down to three things, and all three are preventable.
Why cabinet paint fails
- Grease was never removed. Kitchen cabinets, especially near the range, carry an invisible film of aerosolized cooking oil. Paint does not stick to oil. It sits on top of it and waits to peel. This is the single biggest cause of failure, and it happens on jobs that were otherwise done well.
- The surface was never scuffed. Factory cabinet finishes are catalyzed conversion varnish — glassy, hard and specifically engineered to repel things. Nothing bonds to it until you break the surface tension with sandpaper.
- Wall paint was used instead of cabinet enamel. Wall paint stays slightly soft forever by design, so it can flex with the wall. On a cabinet door that softness reads as "dents when you look at it." You need a coating that cures hard.
Is your kitchen a good candidate?
Refinishing works beautifully on solid wood doors, MDF or plywood boxes, and most thermofoil in good condition. It is a great fit when:
- The boxes are structurally sound and the layout works for you
- The doors are not delaminating, swollen or water-damaged at the bottom edges
- You like where things are and you just hate how it looks
Refinishing is the wrong call when boxes are particleboard that has swollen from a leak, when thermofoil is already peeling from the substrate, or when you actually need a different layout. Paint does not fix layout.
The professional process
1. Document and disassemble
Every door and drawer front is numbered with tape on the hinge edge, and a map is drawn of the kitchen. Hinges and pulls go into labeled bags by opening. Cabinets are not symmetrical — a door that came off opening 14 will not hang right on opening 15.
2. Degrease, twice
A dedicated degreaser or TSP substitute, applied, agitated, and rinsed. Then a second pass with denatured alcohol on the areas around the range and above the dishwasher. If the rag comes up discolored, you go again.
3. Sand every surface
180 to 220 grit on every face, edge, profile and inside corner. The goal is not to remove the finish — it is to dull it uniformly. A glossy spot left behind is a future chip.
4. Fill and repair
Old hardware holes filled if you are changing pull spacing. Dings and dents filled with a hard filler, not spackle. Any grain filling happens now.
5. Bonding primer
A primer specifically formulated for slick surfaces. On raw or stained wood, and on anything with knots, it must also be stain-blocking or tannins will bleed through and yellow your white cabinets within weeks.
6. Two sprayed finish coats
Sanding lightly with 320 grit between coats. Doors are sprayed flat on racks, both sides, in a controlled space. Boxes and face frames are sprayed in place inside plastic containment with the rest of the kitchen sealed off.
7. Cure, then reassemble
Doors go back on with adjusted hinges, felt bumpers on the corners, and hardware installed with a template so every pull is in the same place.
Products that actually hold up

Avoid: standard interior wall paint in any sheen, "one-coat" cabinet kits sold at big box stores, and chalk paint with a wax topcoat anywhere near a sink or a range.
Oak grain: fill it or embrace it
Red oak has deep open pores. Paint them and you will still see the grain pattern through the color — like white paint over a textured surface. There are two legitimate answers.
Fill it with a grain filler or a sandable high-build primer, sanded flat, repeated until the surface reads smooth. It adds a full day or more and a meaningful cost, and it produces genuinely smooth doors.
Embrace it. A lot of people love painted oak specifically because the grain still reads. It looks intentional, especially in a warm white or a deep green. Decide before you start, not after the first coat.
Spray vs brush and roll
Spraying is why professional cabinets look like furniture. An atomized coat lays down with no brush marks and no roller stipple, and it gets into profiles evenly.
Brush and roll can produce a decent result on flat slab doors with a high-quality enamel and a fine foam roller. On raised-panel or shaker doors with profiles, it will always read as painted-in-place. If you are doing this yourself, a good brush and a self-leveling waterborne alkyd is the realistic path.
Cure time vs dry time
This is the step DIYers skip and then blame the paint. Dry to the touch is usually 1–2 hours. Full cure is 14–30 days. During that window the finish is still hardening and is vulnerable.
So: rehang doors after 24–72 hours, but for the first two to three weeks, do not stack anything against the doors, do not scrub them, and put felt pads on so doors are not slapping wood-on-wood against the frame. Kitchens that get treated gently for three weeks stay perfect for years.
What it costs to hire out
Professional cabinet refinishing in the Seattle area runs $95–$165 per door and drawer front. A typical 30-opening kitchen lands around $3,000–$5,000. Compare that to $25,000–$45,000 for new cabinetry and the math is not close — as long as your boxes are sound.
