Our Written Workmanship Warranty
3 years on interiors, 5 years on exteriors. Here is exactly what that covers, what it does not, and how to make a claim.
Coverage
Martin's Budget Painting warrants that our workmanship will be free from defects for the periods below, beginning on the date of substantial completion:
| Work type | Warranty period | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Interior painting | 3 years | Peeling, blistering, flaking and excessive cracking caused by our application or preparation |
| Exterior painting | 5 years | Peeling, blistering and flaking caused by our application or preparation |
| Cabinet refinishing | 3 years | Delamination, peeling and adhesion failure caused by our preparation or application |
| Deck & fence staining | 1 year | Application defects. Horizontal wear and UV fading are normal and excluded |
If a covered defect appears, we will repair the affected area and recoat it at no charge for labor or materials. Where an exact match is no longer achievable, we will recoat to the nearest natural break line at our discretion.
What is not covered
- Normal wear, scuffs, scratches, dents, nail pops and impact damage.
- Fading, chalking or color change from ultraviolet exposure — a normal characteristic of all exterior coatings.
- Failure caused by moisture intrusion, including roof and plumbing leaks, failed flashing, gutter failure, inadequate ventilation, condensation, sprinkler overspray, or standing water.
- Mold, mildew and algae growth arising from a moisture source we did not create. In this climate, north-facing surfaces will grow organisms; periodic washing is homeowner maintenance.
- Structural movement, settlement cracking, framing shrinkage, foundation movement or seismic damage.
- Substrate failure — dry rot, insect damage, delaminating siding, rusting metal, failed masonry.
- Failure of coatings we did not apply, or of our coating applied over a customer-directed surface we advised against in writing.
- The paint itself. You purchase the finish paint, so the product is covered by its own manufacturer warranty and by your receipt, not by us. This warranty covers our application and preparation of that product. Defects caused by the product itself — poor hide, colour drift between batches, premature fade, a bad can — are a manufacturer claim, and we will help you make it.
- Any product you supplied that differs from the product line, sheen or quantity we specified in writing, where we told you before applying it and you asked us to proceed (Terms §3A.5).
- Surfaces you asked us to paint over a condition we identified in writing (see Terms §5.4).
- Horizontal wear surfaces: deck boards, stair treads, handrails, thresholds, and floors.
- Damage from pressure washing, harsh cleaners, solvents or abrasives applied after our work.
- Work performed on the property by others after we complete.
- Touch-up flashing on satin, semi-gloss and gloss finishes — a property of the coating, not a defect.
- Projects on which the final balance was not paid in full.
Transferability
This warranty is extended to the original customer at the original property. It transfers one time to a subsequent owner of the same property for the remainder of the term, provided we are notified in writing within 30 days of the sale.
Paint manufacturer warranties
The coatings themselves carry warranties from their manufacturers (Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and others). Those warranties are between you and the manufacturer, typically cover the product only and not labor, and are separate from this workmanship warranty. We keep records of the exact products and batch information used on your home and will help you pursue a manufacturer claim.
How to make a claim
- Contact us in writing at [email protected] or email [email protected] as soon as you notice the issue. Waiting allows the condition to worsen and may reduce coverage.
- Include your name, property address, approximate completion date, a description of the issue, and photographs.
- We will respond within 5 business days and schedule an inspection within 21 days, weather permitting.
- Warranty repairs are scheduled around active production work and appropriate weather conditions. Exterior warranty work is generally performed in the April–October season.
Maintenance that protects your warranty
- Wash exterior surfaces annually with a soft wash — especially north-facing walls and anything shaded by trees.
- Keep shrubs and vegetation trimmed at least 12 inches off siding.
- Keep gutters and downspouts clear and directing water away from the structure.
- Re-caulk failed joints as they appear; caulk has a shorter life than paint.
- Run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and make sure they vent outside rather than into the attic.
- Address roof and plumbing leaks immediately.
Reasonable maintenance is a condition of coverage. Neglect that causes or accelerates a failure is excluded.
